History of Ramen

Illustration of the history of ramen, from its genesis with Chinese immigrants to Japan in the mid-1800s to its current international popularity, with nods in between to the roles of Japanese imperialism bringing in foreign labor and US occupation controlling the import and distribution of wheat rations.

This piece was originally created for Family Style Zine: An AAPI Food Anthology, edited by Farrah Su and Cynthia Yuan Cheng, and was accompanied by a short essay on the history of ramen by Alex Kanegawa.
